Azure Services Platform

by Ryan Lane on November 4, 2008

Back home from PDC and I’m still processing all the information that I put in to my brain.  There was a lot to take in and I think it will be a while before we start to see the effects of all this new technology that was introduced.  Congratulations to Microsoft for continuing to innovate the PC.

One the big announcements at PDC was the Windows Azure platform. It’s a cloud services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services that can be used individually or together.

Currently it brings together several of Microsoft’s leading products to the cloud for use with the applications we create.   The following services are currently included in the platform:

  • Live Services -  provides developers with an social applications frameworks and experiences, across a range of digital devices.
  • Microsoft SQL Servicesin the cloud as web-based services, allows for  storage of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
  • Microsoft .NET Services - Microsoft-hosted, highly scalable, developer-oriented services that provide key building blocks required by many cloud-based and cloud-aware applications.
  • Microsoft SharePoint ServicesIt’s still a little vague how these service will work with Azure.
  • Dynamics CRM Services Not much to say yet here, very little information has been released so far about it, once I learn more I’ll be sure to post it here.
